Character Story 3: An Promise Between the Two of Us

Scene: A beach.

Rei is taking some time off at the beach.

Rei
How wonderful, to have found a nice spot like this. It's quiet, and the fish are plentiful... What a perfect holiday.

Rei
It truly sets me at peace, to be able to fish peacefully like this...

Rei
Hm...? There's... someone besides me fishing here. And, right as I'm thinking of who it could be... Isn't that him?

Rei approaches.

Rei
So, you can fish, too. Today seems to be a good day to catch a lot in this area.

Rei
Hey, you've hooked one! You'd better reel it in quickly!

Yuuki
1. Concentrate on reeling it in.

Rei
Nice, you're doing good!

Rei
W-Wait, this is bad! At this rate, you're going to be pulled into the sea! What kind of giant creature is this...?

A big splash.

Rei
Huh...!? This thing that just jumped up... I've never seen such a massive fish!

Rei
If that thing is your opponent, with your fishing gear, you'll only be pulled in! If this is what it's come to, then I'll cut that thing up!

Giant Fish
Roooaar!

Rei
It's noticed me! Good! I'll chop it up! Mistral Blast! ^[1]

Rei attacks.

Rei
Whew... That was a dangerous spot. But you're amazing to have been able to hook such a big fish.

Yuuki
1. Offer the fish to Rei.

Rei
You're giving this to me? But you're the one who caught it...

Rei
As thanks for helping me out...? If that's the case, then I'll accept it unreservedly.

Rei
... Though I say that, the covetous look on your face is bothering me. You're the one who gave it to me, you know.

Rei
On that topic, why were you fishing?

Yuuki
1. "For cooking ingredients."

Rei
Hmm... But, you haven't caught a single fish yet.

Yuuki's stomach rumbles.

Rei
Ha ha ha, that was an impressive rumble. Then, the fish we caught earlier -- how about we start cooking it here, and we eat it together? I wouldn't be able to finish it by myself anyway.

Rei
You're hungry, aren't you? Please, eat it without hesitation.

Later...

Rei
... My, you really eat a lot.

Yuuki
1. "Your cooking is really good."
2. "You're a lifesaver."

Can you really call it cooking, though? I'm totally clueless when it comes to anything beyond just the simplest recipes. But it truly makes me happy to hear your praise.

Rei
Ha ha, you're exaggerating. Seeing you this happy was worth treating you to this.

What are you going to do now? I was planning to fish for a while longer; if you'd like, why don't we fish together?

Yuuki
1. "I'll have to fish up enough to make up for the portion you just gave me."

Rei
You don't need to repay me for anything. But I guess I won't say no if you do. Let's get started, then.

Hmm...? Your fishing hook has gotten loose. You should be more careful about these things.

Rei
Right, just fasten it back on like so... Hold on, don't you think you're doing it strangely?

Rei
... By any chance, are you a novice at fishing? If that's the case, then of course you wouldn't have caught anything.

Honestly... There's no way around it, I guess. I'll teach you how.

Firstly, it's important to be mindful of the line and the hook that you're going to be using on any given day. If you handle your equipment incorrectly, you won't be able to catch anything no matter what.

The next thing is the place you choose to fish. If you cast in a place where there aren't any fish, then it's obviously pointless. But there are a lot of fish around here, so it's all right if you don't put too much thought into it today.

Rei
After that, you have to think about how far away you cast your line, and how far down you float your hook... There are a bunch of things to consider, but I'll try to demonstrate while I'm teaching you, so try to follow along.

Rei

Yuuki

Rei
Fishing master!? It's kind of embarrassing to be called that...

Rei
I just can't abandon a friend in need, that's all. Please don't think so much of it.

Rei
Beyond that... I feel that I'm the one who should be thanking you. Because I had a lot of fun.

Rei
Usually, I go fishing by myself. This is the first time in quite a while that I've had someone else here... And I really enjoyed it.

Rei
If it's also all right with you, would you like to go fishing again sometime?

Yuuki
1. "I would be glad to."

Rei
Great. Then, let's make it a promise between the two of us.

And so, on top of what they already had, Yuuki and Rei became fishing buddies as well.
